Favorite Books on Christ & Christianity

Below is a list of some of my favorite books which refer to Christianity, as well as my prefered Bible. They are in no particular order, and with a brief summary of each book. I have not read much, and need to go do so. Particularly there are several books by Sours which I am told are quite good, and several other authors. Once you click on the "Bookstore" link, please type in "Sours" or "Christ" in the search field for a list of books written by Bahá'ís about Christianity Bookstore.

  1. The New Jerusalem Bible - This was publised about 20 years ago by a group of Christian scholars who went back to the original texts and retranslated the entire Bible. Done very well, has informative commentary, and attemptedt to retain as much of the original charm and beauty of the King James English, while at the same time being accurate from a Linguistic point of view. In my observation, it is the best written Bible from a scholarly standpoint that also does not loose the spiritual message within this monumental work.

  2. Christ and Baha'u'llah - Townshend, A former minister, lays out some logical and useful observatoins in this well done book.

  3. The Christianity of Jesus - Blackwell, interesting observations.

  4. The Heart of the Gospel - Townshend, another good book.

  5. Thief in the Night - Sears, intruging and thought-provoking observations regarding the return of Christ.

Favorite Books on Muhammad & Islam

Below is a list of some of my favorite Bahá'í books on Islam, in no particular order, and with a brief summary of each book. I also start with what I consider the best translation of the Quran. If you would like, you can click on the "Bookstore" link, then please type in "Islam" in the search field for a list of books written by Bahá'ís about Islam Bookstore.

  1. The Holy Quran - A. Yusuf Ali. (Remember this is just my opinion). I believe there are a number of reasons why this is really the only good translation of the Quran. Why I believe this to be true, is discussed in the preface, as well as my own side by side reading of all the below translations (in a few key sections). Sales translation is based on a Maracci, who's intent was to discredit Islam. Rev. Rodwell was limited in his understanding of the deeper meanings, and did not fairly persue them in the course of his translation. Pickthall was an Arabic scholar, but his translation is "almost literal", which of course leads to all sorts of issues from a linguistic standpoint. Not to mention the deeper cultural allusions that are lost. And finally Arberry's rendering is inadequate. You can get it in the free "Ocean" software for PC's.

  2. 6 Lessons on Islam - Great article on Islam. You can also find this in the "Ocean" software.

  3. Muhammad and the Course of Islam - Balyuzi, yet another authorative and informative study by this accomplished Bahá'í scholar.

  4. Muhammad, His Life Based on the Earliest Sources - Martin Lings, really enjoyed this book which tries to tell the story of Muhammad through the eyes of some of his contemporaries. Well researched, fair, and enlightening.

  5. Shi'i Islam, An Introduction - Momen, excellent study by this one of the most talented Bahá'í scholars alive today.
